What an amazing 3 day student workshop!

Updated: Nov 20, 2023

In May the leadership traveled to Kampala Uganda to visit with the students and held a 3- day awareness workshop with the students of pre-teen and teenage years.

Workshop Day One: Understanding Our Bodies, Puberty & Relationships

Students broke into their small groups to discuss the male and female reproductive systems and the physical and emotional changes that accompany puberty. The girls also received a donation of sanitary pads and were taught by the senior peer leaders about menstrual hygiene!

They were joined in the afternoon by teacher Hilda who kindly shared tips on succeeding in the new curriculum, which has been a challenging shift for many students in secondary school.

Workshop Day Two: Understanding Our Minds, Mental Health & Self Care

Students shared their reflections from the previous day, discussed the importance of mental health and well-being, and learned techniques for addressing anxiety, depression, and general self-care practices. We also had the pleasure of being joined by Deputy Administrator Rose from a secondary school that continues to be a strong champion for IHEI students.

The day concluded with a dance party where we all learned some new traditional moves!

Workshop Day Three: Understanding How Our Bodies Engage with Others

Students expanded on the topics discussed on day one, particularly regarding relationships, sex, consent, and methods of mitigating risks (i.e. abstinence and contraceptives). They also contrasted healthy relationships with unhealthy engagement and discussed the intersection with gender-based violence. The students also received hygiene packs including essentials for their everyday wellness.

The day ended with a presentation from Joshua and Muggaga on tips for succeeding in the classroom, and a wonderful skit from the peer leaders and other student participants highlighting key topics discussed throughout the curriculum.
